Every mother matters. Every baby matters.

Sometimes, the importance of Caring for Kiriwina’s work is best told through one mother’s story.

In Kiriwina, our village birth attendant supervisor, Caroleen, and our wonderful VBA volunteers, including Dulcie, sat beside a mother labouring at home, sharing the privilege of being welcomed into that deeply personal space. When labour became difficult, our attendants recognised that she needed further care and referred her to Losuia.

Today, mother and baby are safe.

This is the vital work of village birth attendants: being there for women during labour, supporting them when only their help is needed, recognising when more help is needed, and connecting mothers and babies with health-centre care.

It is a story of compassion, good judgement and knowing when to act. It captures what Caring for Kiriwina’s work means for women, children, and their families.

From home to health centre, hand in hand.

Kiriwina is facing prolonged El Niño conditions. Months of low rainfall are causing crop failures and worsening food shortages across the island. Communities on smaller islands, including Munuwata Island, are particularly affected, as the photographs below reveal.

Water tanks offer little relief because they also rely on rainfall. With crops failing and water supplies declining, families urgently need support.

An effective response must address both immediate and longer-term needs. Emergency assistance will provide food to families hardest hit by the crisis. Ongoing support will improve water security, restore food gardens, and introduce crops better suited to prolonged dry conditions.

Together, these efforts can meet urgent needs and strengthen the community’s resilience for the future.
