Photos of our head VBA’s, representing each circuit on Kiriwina, meeting on Saturday 22 Dec 2018 at Kavataria Village.

We have just been informed that the headlamps have finally been released by Customs without extra fees being charged and will shortly be winging their way to Kiriwina. Yay!

Sadly the internet connection is down again and the Losuia Health Centre, and the entire Island is still without a doctor and also now without of basic drugs with the sick people being told to return to their villages.

You too could own one of these limited edition CD case desk calendars, simply click on the link below and head to our shop. For only $35 we can Australia Post a copy to you asap. All proceeds go towards our Caring for Kiriwina vital projects.

The calendar case size is a very functional 95mm square, it does not take up too much space on your desk. You don’t have to keep opening relevant screens on your computer and devices, all the information is always in view. Sometimes old school works best!

Our In-Country Manager will be flying over from Alotau to Kiriwina towards the end of December with boxes and boxes of essential items. The x 74 headlamps were mailed yesterday and x 50 Birthing Kits including underpants and additional fabric/ reusable/washable menstrual pads have been sent to replace the disposable pads normally used. Rubbish is a massive problem on Kiriwina and hopefully this will help reduce the amount of rubbish on the Island.

Since Caring for Kiriwina’s inception in July 2012, Yarralumla Uniting Church has supported our vital work to allow us to continue Margaret and the Reverand Dr Ralph Lawton’s legacy of love and support for the Kiriwinan people. Yarralumla Church parishioners also continue to support the family to allow the blind Ralph Lawton to live at home at 90 years of age. Thank you so much from the bottom of the our hearts.

On our recent trip to Kiriwina we realised that other than the torches we had recently sent over there was no other available lighting source for the VBA’s work. The VBA’s use burning sticks to check the progress of births at night… a seemingly precarious practice. We are sending x 75 headlamps (which are a triumph of German engineering) over to our wonderful CFK VBA’s, thanks to a 75% off sale and the continued generosity of our wonderful sponsors and donors. We will strive to light the way for our Kiriwinan VBA’s, Mother’s and Babies.

The CFK Training Team arrived back safe and sound late last night. Yay!!!

Although the training week sadly coincided with the very vital October new garden planting period, 210 Village Birth Attendant participants traveled from all over the island and surrounding islands to come together for the week of training. During the training we managed to verify that seemingly all of the initiatives that had been taught 18 months ago in the first workshop had been adopted by the VBA’s, this information was very satisfying for all involved. The 2018 teaching was scaffolded  onto the 2017 training,  the Kiriwinan’s are very adept at role play’s, quizzes were completed and the learning reinforced. We had many meetings whist on the Island to discuss strategies to continue to assist these beautiful people, partnering with elders, relevant stakeholders and the Losuia Health Centre representatives who’s members, retired midwife Bokawau and newly appointed midwife Leness assisted CFK in convening the training.

We wish to thank our intrepid team of midwife educators, the extraordinaire Shea Caplice, Jacqui Andrews and Deputy VBA program director Vanessa Palfreeman for their incredible stoicism, bravery and commitment to the people of Kiriwina. We would also like to thank their families for allowing them to come and preform this vital work and of course all of our amazing supporters, without whom all this would not be possible. We would also like to thank the Kiriwinan people for their famous hospitality and our in country manager Toks, our on Island manager Lepani and our amazing head VBA’s Ruth and Dulcie, (Dulcie’s husband Nelson) and the rest of the Kiriwinan people for making us feel so welcomed and loved during our time on the Island. We will have more updates on all our new initiatives in the coming weeks so please stay tuned.
