Sadly, another year has gone by without being able to travel to Kiriwina and train the Village Birth Attendants. However, we have managed to continue to supply as much essential equipment as we can to support their work. Below a testament to how these training programs have benefitted the Kiriwinan people. Our Christmas wish is that COVID circumstances improve worldwide and that we will all be able to travel safety to Kiriwina in 2022 and continue the good work with the support of our wonderful Kiriwinan’s and our sponsors and donors.
Merry Christmas from the VBA training team – CFK VBA co-director Vanessa Palfreeman, Midwife educators Shea Caplice and Jacqui Andrews and CFK co-Director Jodi Lawton xx.

The training of Kiriwina Village Birth Attendants (KVBA) for three consecutive years from 2017, 2018 and 2019 by qualified nurses and mid-wives from Australia, has now bear fruits to the KVBA. Approximately, 80% of the birth deliveries were conducted in villages and were attended by the KVBA’s. Only 20% of the deliveries were conducted at Losuia Health Centre. The training the KVBA’s have attained or acquired from the Australian mid-wives and nurses has greatly improved and enhance their skills in attending to deliveries. About 95% of the deliveries were successful and babies are now the testimonies of the work of these village birth attendants.
CFK supports the KVBA with birthing kits, torches, lanterns, birth record books, soap, umbrella’s buckets, and other necessities to assist them in their delivery routines.
The water is running now for the students and teachers and the surrounding community. Unfortunately this is a short term fix. These photos are taken of the newly repaired pump while it is still working. This pump needs parts for maintenance which will take time and cost money, otherwise it will break down in a short period of time :(.
Update from CFK November enews: Koega completed fixing Oyabia primary school water pump. The water is running now for students and teachers and surrounding community. Yay!!!
Thank you to all our sponsors and donors!!! Without your help none of this would be possible.

Testimonials:
It was a joyous moment for David Max Ibwasa seeing him with full smile while pumping the water for himself. Couple of days ago he was carrying little containers to fetch water for his family but now the pump has made life easier for him coz its just few meters away from his house.
Thanks to the social media for making it possible for our lovely friends from afar to react positively to help us. I and the Oyabia and Rabesi community want to send our sincere gratitude to CFK team from Aussie and Toks Bwaina from Pom with the local team here in Trobs for putting things together for our pump to function.. Thank you all so much. Kamatokisi.
From Enos Enos, from Rabesi Village, thanking CFK on behalf of Oyabia/Rabesi people.
Thanks to the CFK team especially Toks Bwaina for quick respond to get the local team to have the pump fixed as soon as possible. Not forgetting the other members of the CFK team who make things possible for our community. Kamatokisi Saina kwaiveka.
Arthur Galaboda, from Kavataria village who is enjoying the pump that was recently fixed.
With the help of our fabulous sponsors and donors, and Lila the xmas elf we have managed to pack and send another two huge boxes over to Kiriwina. Wishing our donations a safe and speedy journey.
David Antonio was a dear friend, and like an elder brother to us. We loved his energy and passion for life. His humour was infectious, he cooked great mona, and loved to share all things Kiriwinan with us. We give thanks for his life and friendship and are deeply saddened by his passing. We will miss him very much.
We send our deepest condolences to his family, and to all of those who are also close to him, who are no doubt also feeling this loss deeply.
Tuwagu, rest in peace.
With love
Doug & Jodi Lawton
