News

We are extremely honoured to be invited by the Bishop to an event celebrating Ralph and Margaret Lawton’s work with the Kiriwinan people scheduled for the last two weeks of April.

And after three long years, we will also take this opportunity to meet up with our wonderful CFK in-country and Island volunteers, our fabulous VBAs and the Losuia Health Centre to check on the progress of all our projects on the Island and to deliver much-needed support. Please be sure to look out for further updates.

Thank you to all our donors and sponsors for allowing this life-saving work to continue🙌.

Here are excerpts from the letter we sent to our newly appointed Foreign Minister over the weekend. Let’s get this quality aid intervention reinstated as a priority!!!

In 2018 CFK received an Australian Government Friendship Grant which funded our delivery of several midwifery education sessions on Kiriwina for the local VBAs. This was undertaken by two wonderful midwife educators from the Royal Hospital for Women, Randwick NSW (for details see this link: https://www.dfat.gov.au/sites/default/files/nsw_-_caring_for_kiriwina.png.) Our experience and feedback from these short and intensive sessions highlighted the importance of ongoing training and education for the VBA volunteers whose work in the community is literally lifesaving.

Unfortunately, COVID put a hold on the Friendship Grants and therefore the continuing of these in-country training activities over the last few years. While CFK continues its core commitment to the Kiriwina people, we are extremely aware of the critical need of trained and educated personnel overseeing midwifery and birthing support both at the local Health Clinic and in the community.

We ask if DFAT is proposing to reinstate the Friendship Grants scheme. It was an excellent mechanism for providing important aid to our closest neighbour, amongst others. Small and focused charities such as ours are well placed to provide quality overseas aid at a grass roots level to vulnerable communities, and the reinstatement of such a scheme would greatly improve the health and well being of some of our poorest neighbours, not to mention be a great thing for our countries as well.

Yours sincerely etc

We are feeling extremely happy that the systems that we have in place that deal with the difficult logistics involved in delivering these important items to the Village Birth attendants and Losuia Health Centre on Kiriwina Island are working :).

The people of Kiriwina are really grateful, thankful and appreciate CFK for the services provided to them.  Kirwina people also convey their inner most feelings of gratitude and appreciation to the donors all over the world. Thank you very much.

The pregnancy rate on Kiriwina in the first quarter of 2021 has doubled compared to the last quarter of 2020 as reported by sister Linnesse of Losuia Health Centre. The high rate of pregnancy is also confirmed by the Village Birth Attendants (VBA’s) from various circuits of Kiriwina. According to Linnese of Losuia Health Centre, the Losuia Health Centre had run out of family planning birth control measures, resulting in a high rate of pregnancies. The Losuia Health Centre is in desperate need of family planning control methods and measures. Also, the Losuia Health Centre is short of basic drugs and medical supplies and is in need of such supplies.

Due to the high rate of pregnancy, the Losuia Health Centre and Kiriwina VBA’s are requesting more birthing kits, hand gloves, face masks, soap, touches, buckets, umbrellas, touches or lanterns, and batteries to assist them to attend to deliveries during day and night.

Thank you to all our sponsors and donors for enabling us to continue this life-saving work. Images of the Kavataria Village pump being fixed, CFK plumber Mr. Koega and his boys attended to the water pump, and now the water pump is working and serving the community.

World Water day celebrates and raises awareness of global water issues. Clean drinking water is fundamental to all our lives and needs to be valued. During this time of COVID prevention, it should be even more valued. At CFK our very own plumber’s Mr. Koega and his boy’s job is to constantly maintain the 5 pumps that have been installed around the Island and advise and install the new pump/s that have already been purchased and are in the process of being freighted to Kiriwina.
