Caring for Kiriwina would like to say a big thank you to a valiant couple of P&O passengers, Helen and Randall Wilson who, despite the usual hurdles thrown at them by Customs and Port officers managed to deliver two bags of birthing kits as well as torches, ear droppers and women’s underwear to the head of the VBA’s on Kiriwina Ruth Boaz and her husband (Pictured in the photo below).

Helen has generously reported on her journey, final paragraph of report below:

“The two bags have reached their new home and we trust that the women who use them from across each of the villages on this beautiful island will recall the love of the Lawton family whose links continue through the United Church.”

and of course the wonderful couple who delivered the items.

Thanks to our wonderful donors and packers we are also sending other items with this lot of birthing kits such as uniforms, underpants, torches, suction syringes and other necessary items. Also, Toks has made it to Kiriwina, yeah!

Our in-country manager has been delayed in Alotau as the boat he was meant to be traveling on was not ready to leave. He is taking donated sporting gear for the local schools and Birthing Kits for the Losuia Health Centre. He is also meeting with the head VBA’s to inform them of the next training sessions progress, delivering the remaining birthing kits for distribution to all VBA’s on Kiriwina. Hopefully the boat will be ready to leave Alotau tomorrow.

A massive thank you to our wonderful volunteer packing Teams from Sydney and the ACT for getting these essential birthing kits together. Fabulous team effort from our teams at Beyond Q Bookshop and Cafe Weston Creek ACT and our wonderful Sydney packers Diana and Kylie Adams. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank a kind couple making the trip to Kiriwina who have volunteered their services to deliver the kits to our CFK VBA’s. What a fabulous initiative St. Vincent’s Day is at St Vincent’s College Potts Point.

Caring For Kiriwina has been the beneficiary of the College’s Social Justice initiatives for the past few years and thankfully the College have continued to support our work by organising the purchasing of the Birthing Kit materials, packaging the kits and sending them onto our representatives in PNG.

This year we were honored to be invited to talk to the girls about our work in the Trobriands. Thankfully our team member Vanessa Palfreeman made herself available yesterday to help communicate the realities of our operation to the students.

Our immense gratitude goes to teachers Sue Thomas and Simone Lock, Head of De Lacy House and De Lacy House for continuing to support this vital work.
