Photos of our fabulous Postie Andy and team, including Dugie, sending the boxes and boxes of birthing kits, baby knits from our gorgeous Belrose knitters, Michelle’s handmade dresses for the girls, pens, and pencils for the schools, backpacks for VBA’s, and school children, panadol for the Losuia Health Centre and Kavataria volunteer clinic.
We have also purchased another 30 lanterns, 10 boxes of batteries, 5 boxes of gloves, 10 boxes of face masks. Our In-country manager will travel over around the 14th of May to deliver female dignity kits to Kiriwina High Secondary School and meet with the school management to confirm the balance of 2021 school fees for 19 students.
Toks is also traveling to Kiriwina to officially open the harvest season as the host of the CFK Food Security Program to commence the harvesting of the yams that will be carried and stored into the yam houses to conclude the program.

Rev. Dr. Ralph Lawton was regarded as a Kiriwinan (Trobriand Islander). He called Kiriwina “home”. He spoke the Kiriwinan language fluently. He lived the life of the people of Kiriwina. Ate the food, drank the water, felt the pains, struggles and the hardships daily. Ralph respected the cultural norms of Kiriwina.
In keeping with the Kiriwinan’s sense of humor Ralph was known as a chief and given the Kiriwinan name “Iyupalilaguya Lotoni” which means “He who thinks he is Chief Lawton‘.
In Ralph’s honor the Oyabia Mission Station will now be renamed “Oyabia Iyupalilaguyau Lotoni”. Dual country memorial services were held simultaneously on Tuesday 27th April at 11am, with a huge socially distanced crowd of Kiriwinan’s in attendance coming from all over the Island. Tributes were given by representatives of the Kiriwina Bible Translation Committee, VBA’s, Catholic Church and United Church. During that ceremony the New Church Building at Mulosaida Village was also dedicated in honor of Ralph and officially named the “Rev. Dr. Ralph Lawton Memorial Church”. The church will be officially opened and dedicated in July 2021.

It is with deep sorrow that the Lawton family announces the death of their beloved Rev. Dr. Ralph Stanley Lawton.
A TRIBUTE FROM KIRIWINA – RALPH’S LEGACY LIVES ON
Ralph’s legacy will live on in the lives of the people of Kiriwina from generation to generation. As long as the Kiriwina bible, the hymn book and the Kiriwina dictionary are used by the people of Kiriwina, “Ralph’s legacy lives on forever”.

Ralph served god with commitment, dedication and faith. Just as god called David ‘as man after his own heart” so as Ralph. Ralph was obedient, humbled and faithful to the call of god. He served god with distinction and loyalty.

Pregnancy rates have soared on Kiriwina, urgent intervention required!

The pregnancy rate on Kiriwina in the first quarter of 2021 has doubled compared to the last quarter of 2020 as reported by sister Linnesse of Losuia Health Centre. The high rate of pregnancy is also confirmed by the Village Birth Attendants (VBA’s) from various circuits of Kiriwina. According to Linnese of Losuia Health Centre, the Losuia Health Centre had run out of family planning birth control measures, resulting in a high rate of pregnancies. The Losuia Health Centre is in desperate need of family planning control methods and measures. Also, the Losuia Health Centre is short of basic drugs and medical supplies and is in need of such supplies.
Due to the high rate of pregnancy, the Losuia Health Centre and Kiriwina VBA’s are requesting more birthing kits, hand gloves, face masks, soap, touches, buckets, umbrellas, touches or lanterns, and batteries to assist them to attend to deliveries during day and night.

Thank you to all our sponsors and donors for enabling us to continue this life-saving work. Images of the Kavataria Village pump being fixed, CFK plumber Mr. Koega and his boys attended to the water pump, and now the water pump is working and serving the community.
World Water day celebrates and raises awareness of global water issues. Clean drinking water is fundamental to all our lives and needs to be valued. During this time of COVID prevention, it should be even more valued. At CFK our very own plumber’s Mr. Koega and his boy’s job is to constantly maintain the 5 pumps that have been installed around the Island and advise and install the new pump/s that have already been purchased and are in the process of being freighted to Kiriwina.

There has been an increase in pregnancies on Kiriwina and the lack of lighting during night deliveries is a huge problem for our VBA’s. CFK is happy to announce another x 50 lanterns are on their way. Yay team!!!

Rebecca and Winniefred, two of the four top students of Kiriwina Secondary School selected to do Grades 11 and 12 at Aiyura National High School in Eastern Highlands Province.
The families of both students were farewelled at Jackson’s terminal last week.
Both arrived in Nadzab, Lae and school vehicles were not available for pick up, so the school arranged accommodation for them at Lae to spend a night and the school truck picked them up in the morning and took them to the school.
Best wishes girls. We understand this will be a very different culture to get used to 🙂
